    Richmond’s international rookie, Irishman John Heslin, says he is itching to experience consistent match play, after six months of solid training.

    The 21-year-old from Westmeath relocated to Melbourne in July last year, and while the Tigers were in the middle of their season, Heslin confined to the training track.

    “Six months is a long time not to play games, and I’m getting to the stage where I’m just itching to play games,” he said.

    “Back home I used to play games once a week, sometimes twice, for the whole year, and only have a week or two off. So six months of just training has been tough that way. “

    Heslin has worked closely with Richmond’s fitness staff and coaches, learning the game, developing his skills, and dealing with the rigours of pre season training.

    “It’s my first time having a pre-season ever, because I never had one when I was in Ireland,” he said.

    It could also simply be that you come out to play a game and because we are finally getting some depth, you see that you are starting a long way back and the chance of you cracking it in the big league is very slim and that has a negative impact on your excitement and then you realise you have no family here and no long-term friends. You may come with full intentions of sticking it out, but if you aren't enjoying it, why waste everyones time.

    It's sad, but I never have much hope for the Irish recruits. Especially if they are recruited at a really young age (under 22) and don't have any other connection to Australia.

    Expensive and disappointing exercise this.

    Whether the kids are from Ireland or interstate, the go home factor is always a risk. The recruiting of kids like Gibson Turner, that have successfully spent time away from home, offers much more appeal and surety.

    Living half a world from home there's lots of things that can trigger homesickness, an illness in the family, your mates all calling you from some party, an old girlfriend calling, The 6 Nations, etc.

    AFL pre-season is one of the longest and most grinding in the world. Everybody gets down. A season dedicated to kicking the dew off with Coburg 2's would probably just add to the "where is this all heading ?" feeling. Pretty easy to get homesick.

    All we know is that he is gone home. The stated reason is homesickness. All else is conjecture.

    I am happy to cut the kid some slack. HK is spot on. It is a huge lifestyle change for such a young bloke, Combined with trying to learn a new game and doing a hard preseason in Melbourne weather, it certainly would have been daunting for anyone.

    I actually wish the kid luck and would welcome him back if he had a change of mind.

    Yes he is and so are you but that should be obvious to anyone. Which is another reason it is ood to chuck someone in a highly stressful situation in with a group of lads fresh out of home.

    When you look at that article written less than a month ago, it would seem that the club wasn't aware of any problems he was having, otherwise it would seem strange to write an article about the upcoming season hopes of a player toying with quitting.

    There has to be some alarm bells ringing here.

    Sorry, bit out of the loop. Moving half way round the world has cut short my yellow and black hours.

    Is TBR campaigning to be made house mother of the yellow and black house? Or has TBR heard rumours of issues in the house? Should the club be selling footage of house living (ala big brother) and putting the money into the FTF?
