This is on the Australian War Memorial website:

    http://www.awm.gov.au/exhibitions/forging/australians/simpson.asp

Even though he was a Pom he did enlist in the AIF so that would qualify him as an Aussie for mine.

Andy, I was referring to members of the Australian Forces. I wold aslo thik that Roden Cutler and Breaker Morant are 2 other well known soldiers. But I still think Dunlop and Simpson are the most famous, which IMO is quite interesting given what they did. It tends to indicate to me that Australians are not caught up with the glorification of war, but rather things such as courage and mateship.

Thanks Jase that's the name that eluded me.[:-thumbu]

I can assure you that there are quite a few Aussies out there who know a great deal more about our history, war & otherwise, after spending time in my class. I used to teach it to my Year 6s long before it became fashionable. (In fact one Principal was most annoyed with me for doing so.)

There is some great Australian history, and I love the stuff, just don't get enough time to read about it.

Simpson was born in Durham, UK, and his surname wasn't 'Simpson' it was Kirkpatrick, Simpson was his middle name.

Those other two are good choices and so would be Walter Peeler, a VC winner from a local family up here.

Every time I see SW I think it's Ben.

BTW might be off season but I am loving Kevin McCloud's "Grand Tour' on ABC. Kev is amazing, a real renaissance man but also very witty & doesn't mind making himself look silly.

Cosgrove, Keith Miller and there was an Aussie(who's name escapes me) flying in Greece in WW2 who may have been the allies highest scoring ace except that the squadron records were lost when Greece was overrun. There were also Aussie bomber pilots with 617 squadron who flew the dambuster raid.

Saw a doco on Sir John Monash a few months ago. He may not have been a digger per se, but he fought as much anti-semitism and the poms horrible attitudes to do what he could for HIS men. It's a pretty good story.

Ah, after reading all this thread your comment makes sense but a bit obtuse for me.

I only know of the movie from what I've read on Y&B, might see it when it comes on tv.

Didn't know Cuz was in it, though.

Do yourself a favor and see it in 3D before it goes off the big screen. Very entertaining and suitable for all ages. I took my Wife, 11yr old Son and Monster-In-Law aged 82 and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a bit of a tree hugger movie, but it's also very unique and entertaining all the same!
