YOUNG Richmond forward Dean Macdonald has has taken extended leave from the club to deal with personal issues.

The Tigers this morning confirmed they were helping Macdonald, 19, work through a difficult time.
Macdonald, a promising rover and goalkicking forward, was recruited from Gippsland Power with pick 51 in the 2010 national draft and is yet to play a senior game.

His absence comes as a blow to the Tigers on the eve of the season.

Richmond begins its NAB Cup campaign on February 17.

Is personal leave the new hamstring?

That's unfortunate. No point in specualting what's going, but we have had a number of players over the last few seasons be given leave to deal with issues Morton, Taylor, Roberts, Connors, someone else I am forgetting and now Macdonald. It is a concern, but as the same time it could simply be putting the players personal welfare over the club or showing that the club is professional and will not ignore issues and will deal with them.

One of the biggest concerns is that the previous players we have given "leave" to have not ended up recovering and becoming lasting players. Hopefully Dean is an exception.

Hopefully it's not an issue with motivation.

It's a bit of a worry that a 19 y.o. has such pressing personal issues that he has to have leave from a job that most kids can only dream about.

Having said that, I have no idea what the issues are and, looking back, I recall what was happening in my life at that age yet I managed to keep working but I was taking in by a very caring family.

Guess we can only cross our fingers and hope he gets his life sorted out.

    Gilligan was another, Lisa.

It could be an illness in the family, etc. I have no idea what it is. Either way, the club knows what it is doing.

I hope that Dean is able to sort it out and get back to the club soon.

But have to laugh at the article. Apparently it is a 'blow' to the Tigers on the eve of the season starting. The kid has done very little to get overly excited about to date. Not as if he is a first round draft pick with high expectations.

I really hope he comes back as he is a very likeable kid and I for one thought we may have seen him in our senior forward line at some point this year.

Who is in charge of player welfare? Do we have such a position?

I think Dale Weightman has a role in this area. May be wrong though. Do the players still have mentors i.e past players?

Yes, Blacky, I haven't seen it updated for some time and quite a few of those players are no longer on our list.

Good question for RFC_Official. I'll ask him.

I spoke to Pickers not that long ago and I asked him if he was still doing it. ( He mentors Foley ) He said it's kinda relaxed. Some players use the mentors more than others. Said they usually organise a game of golf once a year or something like that.

That's the hard bit about mentoring, both in football and in professional life - it only really works when you have the right pairings. It's hard to pour out your feelings to someone you don't really know well or connect with, especially when you are going through a hard time.

Might need to be a bit of scrutiny applied to those positions, the record lately isn't flash.
