THE AFL has scrapped the special assistance rule, under which poor-performing clubs were automatically granted priority picks in the NAB AFL Draft.

Stricter criteria for any assistance has been developed to replace the old rule, which was consistently linked to tanking.

Under the old rule, any team that accumulated 16 match points or fewer in a year was entitled to a selection prior to the second round of the draft, while any club with two consecutive seasons of 16 points or less, was entitled to a selection prior to the first round of the draft.

Clubs getting a priority pick after just one bad season had become particularly controversial.

The most recent example of that was when the West Coast Eagles received a priority pick (it was No. 26, which they used to select highly touted key forward Jack Darling) in the 2010 draft.

Good news. They haven't scrapped draft help altogether but will be adding more qualifying points so clubs can't exploit it.

Not sure why they have rules at all. Surely the commission should just decide each case on merit?

I think they will, but there will be specific guidelines for them to follow that they may not even make public. Similar to that of the Compo pick deal for GWS, GC and soon to be Free Agents. All they have said is that it isn't finalised and that it will take into account a number of seasons, % and injury tolls that can affect performance.

I hope it means that GWS and GC don't get priority picks this year because the concessions they got, and the loopholes they've exploited, have been enough of an advantage.

Just waiting patiently for the wages to increase to bursting point, the fan base to become stagnant and unviable and the two of them to go bust after years of embarrassment. Then we can get back to the business of looking at stand-alone teams in Tassie and NT. Rugby and soccer can have NSW and QLD as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing is more certain than those teams being around for the long, long term.

So there wasn't an issue with tanking, but the AFL decided they needed to change the priority pick rule. Uh-huh.

And the reason to keep the new formula secret is not to stop tanking, but because of....?

If the AFL was a country, it'd be amongst the lowest of low with regard to governance & transparency. I suspect one of the 200+ AFL staffers must be the old Iraqi Minister for Information.

They really don't like to admit fault do they?

It's a effective immediately, so GC, Port and GWS will not get any priority picks this year.

Could see Port were prepared to do a Melbourne and tank all season long this year, so happy about that. That said, I suspect their list is in such a condition they'll get a priority pick under the new rules this year anyway. GWS & GC shouldn't be eligible as both of them have a lot of development (and in one case cherry picking) to come.

This is a positive move. The lack of a direct link between number of wins to a priority pick will help with the tanking perception.

Although I can see cries of foul play or favouritism when the AFL commission awards a prioirty pick to one club but not another in a seemingly similar posiition.

Especially if the first one goes to GWS or the Gold Coast.
