Dean Robinson

GEELONG has lost some talent to Gold Coast although not of the on-field variety, with high performance manager Dean Robinson accepting a position with the League’s 17th team.

While Robinson will not begin his official duties at Gold Coast until October, his departure from the Cats is effective immediately.

Robinson’s tenure at Geelong has coincided with a golden era for the club. In his first full season after joining Geelong from NRL club Manly, the Cats won the flag in 2007.

Two more grand final appearances followed, with another premiership being snared in last year’s thrilling win over St Kilda.

Gold Coast to continue playing Hunt in defence

22:14 in AFL, Australia, Gold Coast by Ned

Karmichael Hunt

GOLD Coast recruit Karmichael Hunt will continue to find his feet as a defender this week with coach Guy McKenna naming him to start at full back against the Box Hill Hawks on Saturday.

McKenna had previously claimed Hunt would spend time in the midfield in his third game after debuting in attack against the Coburg Tigers, and playing down back against Frankston last week.

However, the rugby league convert will be given another opportunity to prove his worth as a defender when Gold Coast takes on the Hawks at Southport this weekend.

“I thought he did really well, a good and disciplined effort really, so we thought we’d give him another go to work further on his body control and positioning and apply a few lessons learned,” assistant and defensive coach Shaun Hart told the club’s website.

Cats to get two if Ablett goes north

01:11 in AFL, Australia, Geelong, Gold Coast by Ned

GEELONG will receive two first-round draft picks if it loses Gary Ablett to the Gold Coast.

Under a revised compensation formula just announced,  the AFL has created scope for clubs to receive extra for what it dubs “top echelon” players.

The AFL will use age and what the Gold  Coast is prepared to pay a player as the key indicators of what compensation should be paid.

As revealed in the Herald Sun in May, an independent panel will act as arbiter and will have the final call on compensation.

The panel will consist of Kevin Sheehan, the league talent manager, and game analyst Andrew McKay.
